Visual Field Testing

Your Peripheral Vision
Matters More Than You Think.

Visual field testing maps your entire field of vision โ€” detecting blind spots, peripheral loss, and early signs of glaucoma, retinal disease, and neurological conditions before symptoms appear.

What It Is

What Is a Visual Field Test โ€” and Why Does It Matter?

A visual field test measures the full extent of what you can see โ€” both straight ahead and in your peripheral vision. It's a painless, non-invasive diagnostic test that gives Dr. Tran critical information about the health of your optic nerve, retina, and visual pathways.

What most people don't know: Peripheral vision loss โ€” especially from glaucoma โ€” is gradual and painless. By the time patients notice it, significant and irreversible damage has often already occurred. Visual field testing detects it early.

Glaucoma Screening & Monitoring

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve and causes peripheral vision loss โ€” often with no symptoms until the disease is advanced. Visual field testing is the essential tool for early detection and ongoing monitoring.

๐Ÿ”ด

Retinal Disease Detection

Retinal detachments, macular degeneration, and other retinal conditions can create specific patterns of visual field loss that help guide diagnosis and treatment decisions.

๐Ÿง

Neurological Conditions

Brain tumors, strokes, and multiple sclerosis can produce characteristic visual field defects. Eye testing is often the first step in identifying these systemic conditions.

๐Ÿ’Š

Medication Monitoring

Some medications โ€” including hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) โ€” can damage the retina over time. Regular visual field tests are used to monitor for drug-induced toxicity.

๐Ÿš—

Driving Safety Assessment

Adequate peripheral vision is essential for safe driving. Visual field testing can assess whether a patient meets visual requirements for operating a vehicle.

๐Ÿ“Š

Baseline & Progress Tracking

Results are mapped and compared over time โ€” giving Dr. Tran a clear picture of whether a condition is stable, improving, or progressing, and informing treatment decisions accordingly.

What to Expect

Fast, Painless, and Highly Informative.

1

You'll Sit in Front of a Perimeter Device

The test is performed one eye at a time. You'll look at a central fixation point while briefly appearing lights flash in different areas of your visual field.

2

You Respond to What You See

Each time you see a light flash, you press a button. The device records your responses and maps out your complete field of vision โ€” including any areas where sensitivity is reduced.

3

Dr. Tran Reviews Your Results

The results are analyzed immediately. Dr. Tran will walk you through your visual field map, explain any findings, and discuss what โ€” if anything โ€” needs to be done next.

The test typically takes 10โ€“15 minutes per eye and is completely painless. No drops or dilation are required for most visual field tests.
