Protecting Your Vision
When Diabetes Is a Factor.
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness. Annual diabetic eye exams at Aura Eye Center give you the monitoring and early intervention that your vision depends on.
Diabetes Affects Your Eyes Before You Notice.
The most dangerous thing about diabetic eye disease is that it causes no pain and no noticeable vision change in its earliest stages โ the stages when treatment is most effective.
Diabetic Retinopathy
High blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in your retina. Over time, these vessels can leak, swell, or grow abnormally โ threatening your central vision. We detect these changes early, when intervention is most effective.
Diabetic Macular Edema
Fluid can accumulate in the macula โ the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision โ causing progressive blurring. Early detection allows for timely treatment before vision is significantly affected.
Cataracts
People with diabetes develop cataracts at a younger age and more rapidly. We monitor lens clarity at every exam and advise on timing if surgical referral becomes appropriate.
Glaucoma Risk
Diabetes doubles your risk of glaucoma โ a condition where elevated eye pressure damages the optic nerve. We measure eye pressure and monitor the optic nerve at every diabetic exam.
Retinal Photography
We use advanced retinal imaging to document and compare the state of your retinal vessels over time โ giving us a clear picture of how well your blood sugar management is protecting your eyes.
Coordinated Care
We communicate findings with your primary care physician or endocrinologist when needed โ because your eye health and your systemic health are connected.
Recommended Exam Schedule
Newly Diagnosed Diabetes
Schedule your first comprehensive dilated eye exam immediately โ even if your vision feels fine. Establishing a baseline is critical for tracking changes over time.
Annual Exam (Minimum)
Once per year is the standard recommendation for all patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. We'll let you know if your findings warrant more frequent monitoring.
More Frequent if Needed
If early retinopathy or other changes are detected, we may recommend exams every 3โ6 months to monitor progression and guide treatment decisions.
